Care & installation

Proper installation and maintenance of suede wallcoverings ensure their enduring elegance and performance. This guide provides precise steps for preparation, application, and care, tailored to the material’s unique characteristics and the standards of curated craftsmanship.

Substrate Prep

Begin with a clean, dry, and structurally sound surface. Remove any existing adhesives, dust, or debris using a mild detergent and water. Ensure the wall is free of oils, waxes, or residues that could compromise adhesion. If the substrate is uneven or porous, apply a thin, even coat of primer to create a stable base. Allow the primer to dry completely before proceeding.

Paste Type

Use a high-quality, pH-neutral adhesive specifically formulated for natural materials. Avoid water-based pastes with high acidity or solvents that could degrade the suede’s fibers. Apply the adhesive in a thin, even layer using a wide, flat tool to prevent pooling or excess buildup. Work in small sections to maintain control and ensure even coverage.

Seam Handling

Align seams precisely, overlapping edges by 1–2 inches to allow for natural settling. Use a seam roller to press seams firmly, ensuring a tight, seamless finish. Avoid stretching the material during installation, as this can cause distortion or wrinkling. For gaps or uneven sections, use a small amount of adhesive to fill voids and smooth the surface with a clean, dry cloth.

Cleaning

Regular maintenance requires gentle care. Wipe surfaces with a soft, dry microfiber cloth to remove dust or light debris. For spills or stains, blot immediately with a clean, absorbent cloth—never rub. If necessary, use a mild, non-abrasive cleaner diluted in water, applied sparingly with a sponge. Rinse thoroughly with a damp cloth and allow to air dry completely. Avoid direct water contact, steam, or harsh chemicals, which can damage the material.

Light Exposure

Minimize prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, which can cause fading or discoloration. Use UV-protective window films or sheer curtains to filter light. Keep the wall away from heat sources, radiators, or direct airflow, which can accelerate wear or cause warping. In high-traffic areas, consider rotating decorative elements to balance light exposure across the surface.

Expected Lifespan

With proper installation and care, suede wallcoverings can last 10–15 years, maintaining their softness and visual appeal. Regular cleaning and protection from environmental stressors are critical. Avoid abrasive tools, excessive moisture, or prolonged contact with sharp objects. Periodic inspections for wear or damage ensure timely intervention, preserving the integrity of the finish and the underlying substrate.
